Foolish Reading List For 2011 To Build Your Online Business

I’ve been asked to make a list of books that I recommend.  Well, there are a lot so I have edited the list down to just a few to get you started.  The below links are all Amazon affiliate links.  If you end up buying one of these books, I’ll get a 4% commission, which I will promptly add to my Kindle book fund.

Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology

I just got a Kindle & I seriously love this thing.  I’ve been on a journey of giving away most of my personal possessions so I only have what is really important to me.  I read voraciously, but I’m trying to get rid of my books too.  I wasn’t sure the Kindle would be worth it, but I’m very happy I have it now.

The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated: Expanded and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting-Edge Content.

This book has changed the thinking of thousands of people.  It has impacted my life and Izzy’s.  Through my friendship with Joe Polish, I’ve gotten the chance to hang out with Tim Ferriss several times and his mind is much more unique than you get to see inside the book.  I hope it will change your life too.

Getting Everything You Can Out of All You’ve Got: 21 Ways You Can Out-Think, Out-Perform, and Out-Earn the Competition

Jay Abraham was one of the first guys I started learning from in the direct response world.  But his stuff wasn’t how to write an ad, but how to change your thoughts so you create great offers.  This book goes into what you already have that you may not know how valuable what you have is to others.  Since this book came out almost 11 years ago, I’ve read it at least 6 times–probably more.

No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs (NO BS)

I don’t follow all the things in this book, but I’ve learned to make my life better by limiting access to me, which also helps position myself as someone of value.  If I’m accessible all the time, then I must not be that busy.  I’ve got a life and I can only allow so many people into it before my projects begin to suffer.  This book helped me set up systems to manage my time the way I want to use it.

No B.S. Direct Marketing: The Ultimate, No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Direct Marketing for Non-direct Marketing Businesses (NO BS)

Direct response marketing is a critical skill to learn even in an age of community building online.  There are going to be times when you need to sell something and what you learn in the book will help you structure that offer.

The Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing: Build a Million-Dollar Business in 12 Months: Build a Million Dollar Business in Just 12 Months

This is a good introduction to information marketing.  You’ll get some great ideas and can get pointed in the right direction.  Reading this book will help you make the most of the advice Izzy and I give you.  We have taken information marketing and tweaked it so that you can achieve freedom through content creation.

No B.S. Sales Success: The Ultimate No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners, Tough and Spirited Guide

Another great book by Dan Kennedy.  In this book, you’ll learn about positioning yourself and your business so that you’re not prospecting for sales, but people are coming to you to buy.

How to Write a Good Advertisement

When selling, you need to use tactics that get people to take action.  This is a classic guide to creating advertisements that work.  This information isn’t limited to creating an ad for a newspaper or tv.  You can use these principles to do any kind of ad even a blog post that gets people to buy an affiliate product.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing: Violate Them at Your Own Risk!

This is a super fast read, but a foundational book every business owner needs to read.  Tim Ferriss even says he reads this book every time he plans a product launch.

Rework

This 37 Signals book is part philosophy and part how to.  37 Signals is a very successful software company that does things differently from most businesses.  They have few staff, low overhead, simple products and don’t do any advertising, but make many millions of dollars a year.

The Power of Less: The Fine Art of Limiting Yourself to the Essential…in Business and in Life

For the past 2 years I’ve been on an adventure to simplify my life to only what is essential and improves my life and those around me.  This is a great book to help you craft the life you truly want to live.

Zen To Done: The Ultimate Simple Productivity System

I’m not a productivity kind of person.  The book Getting Things Done bored me so much that I couldn’t finish reading it.  There was no way I could implement such a complex system into my life.  In this book, Leo Babauta shows how to make a very simple productivity system that will help you get done the most important things in your life.  It’s so easy that I could use it and even in that I only use parts of it.

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials)

I saved this book for last because this is like getting mind control powers.  You could seriously use this book for evil.  So be cool if you read it.  This is a book every business owner (who isn’t evil) should read.  You’ll be able to look inside the minds of your market and get them to take action that is good for them.

I hope you get a lot of value from these books.  I know I have since I’ve been able to build a life I enjoy with the help of these books.

Enjoy your Foolish Reading,

Great recommendations. Thank you, Tim. At Thor Associates, (www.thorassociates.com) we often implement many of the thought leadership that others have offered but it is always nice to revisit brilliant advice.

    Happy New Year,

    OH THANK YOU!

I was trying to remember the book “Influence”. I heard you talk about it, knew it started with an “I” and was trying to find it on amazon using a bunch of words that began with an “I”, lol. Gotta download it to my kindle right now :D

Remember, be cool. Don’t abuse the magical powers you’ll get after reading that book.

    Tim,

What a great resource! I had to bookmark this when I read it. I’ve read a handful of these books, but I’m psyched to check out the rest. I’m especially interested in “Influence.”

Just out of curiosity, what’s the first “evil” thing I should do with my new powers, once I’ve read “Influence”?

A friend once noted that we tend to seek books that agree with what we already believe or want to believe. I found such a book in Rework. I feel validated!

Considering none of my recent business book reads are on this list, I think I’m reading the wrong books.
