Content Creators Unite! A Foolish Manifesto – FA033

The New, New Media Model for Content Creators
Uniting Podcasters, Bloggers and Video Producers

The business model which Izzy and I have been promoting is customer-support instead of ad-supported. Too many content creators – whether using blogging, podcasting or livestreaming – rely on ad revenue.

When an internet show, say on Youtube, is a huge success and getting hundreds of thousands of views, then the ad revenue can be lucrative. But most never hit huge numbers.

With our model you don’t need large numbers to be successful.

This show is about the direction of Foolish Adventure and how we intend to help Content Creators.

Picks Of The Week

Tim picked a book that was influential in his life, Getting Everything You Can Out of Everything You’ve Got by Jay Abraham.  Click here to see this book and others recommended by Tim.

Izzy picked a site he gets a lot of useful blogging and business knowledge from called Copyblogger.  Even if you’re not a blogger, you will still get information you can use.

Enjoy the Audio Manifesto,

Tim And Izzy

It is amazing really the amount of information you can get out there telling you how to build a web business. It is the ability to pull out the golden nuggets from the worthless pebbles that it the real trick.
At least you two guys come up with a nugget or three worth having.
    All the best for 2011

Great show, Tim & Izzy! I look forward to hearing more about your membership site.

I’m currently setting up a couple of membership sites. I have to admit that even for a ex-software developer like me this stuff gets overwhelming fast. I want to focus on content production and marketing, but I find myself having attacks of analysis paralysis trying to make sense of all the nuts and bolts of putting the actual membership site together. I find myself wondering about such things as: Do I get AMember or Wishlist Member for WordPress? How do I handle payment processing? Should I go with Paypal? Should I go Paypal Pro? Ah, that would be simple. Oh, wait! If I go PayPaI I risk having my funds held for up to 6 months – a business model that’s good for Paypal but bad for me (and yes, it’s happened!). WordPress is easy. Payment processing, membership management, streaming protected content, product delivery, and so forth are where things get really confusing. I may have just outlined a possible premium content ebook for you guys :)

You see how this kind of thought is highly distracting and something I’ve struggled to keep under control. I know you guys have talked about this before. Still, it’s not easy to decide what course of action to take sometimes.

This really is by far the best podcast and resource for niche content producers membership sites – or I should say – the ONLY podcast worth listening to for this subject matter.

Awesome news guys!!! You where the first business podcastblog that I ever found. Izzy’s talk at PodCampAZ was my first glimpse of internet business (I watched the video). Before then I had spent the best part of 12yrs ‘goofing off’ online, not realising what could be achieved from so little. I’ve been kicking myself ever since. A few podcasts into the FA series I started surfing around and found the many many MANY guys who are ‘selling’ online business. I’ve not given my money to any of them as none of them captivated me like you guys do. I’ll be your first loyal member and wish you all the joy and success! *round of applause* Waiting with baited breath for the membership fees.

Fabulous show! I can hardly wait to tell a couple of clients/partners about your ideas and have them listen for themselves. Love the direction you’re taking F.A. in!

I’m very interested in your membership site…sounds like a blast, but then again doing what you love and have it bringing in money is a fun and wild ride!

We are going to cover all those issues in our new product coming out at the end of the month. <– shameless plug But to let you know what we are doing: we are using WordPress + Wishlist + Paypal for our membership site. We do have future plans to use other systems for a couple non-Foolish Adventure ideas we have so that we can share what we learn.

As for it being distracting, I've been messing around and accomplish less than I want by playing with these tools instead of just building. What I keep reminding myself is that I can iterate after launch. Fewer bells and whistles will equal a stable product and then I can work to add fancy stuff later if it proves to be necessary.

And thanks for the kudos, Carl.

Thanks, Tom. I look forward to working with you inside our new project.

Making money doing what you love is the Foolish Adventure way. Thanks for being on this “fun and wild ride.”

I was pleasantly suprised with this podcast (1st one for me) for the following reasons:

    1. for some reason the domainname and also the webdesign sets a false perception (for me). A first glance just doesn’t got me thinking you guys are talking on this level
    2. I completely relate to what you guys are saying about being content creators in the niche you love, and not just some keyword you got with marketsamurai and google keyword tool. I just started a nichesite in a niche I love, but if I believe the Guru’s, there is no money to be made in this niche. There are no affiliate products, and even a search in google doesn’t give you some sponsored links…

I am interested in the membership site, but hope that it is not for newbies (how to setup wordpress site, paypal, wishlist etc….) I am looking for an intermediate level.

    will be back!

Wonderful audio! Thank you. You know what I would love for both of you to do with Foolish Adventures? To choose somebody who is starting his/her own online business and record his process from beginning to end. And broadcast it in different audio episodes. Maybe even video and the written word. You can start from the beginning when both Izzy and Tim are brainstorming with this individual to help him figure out what niche he is passionate about. Up to the end when his business is up and running, bringing him a lot of traffic, happiness, and money. The Foolish episodes of this individual could be organized by modules. Modules are different from topics because modules are more exciting and interactive. You work around problems to be solved rather than topics to be addressed. They intertwine the philosophical with the practical. For example: your first session with this newbie/rookie individual could be: Brainstorming the foolish way. The roles of Izzy and Tim would be twofold: 1.) asking this person questions that help him figure out what niche he wants 2.) Narrowing it down, to avoid being all over the place. As you do this step by step with this person you can broadcast the progress in different episodes. It could be like a docudrama but in online business: You could record the mistakes (rushing to quickly, spending all this money in stuped things), the obstacles (mother in law, envious co-worker who puts him down), achievements (finding the right partners), the aha moments etc. etc. I would love to see the progress of this person and everything that happens to him/her. I think it would attract many listeners and all of us could benefit from the lessons learned.

Great show guys! Looks like 2011 is going to be an awesome year for the show! I’m really excited to hear about your idea to renergize 16 online businesses. What a great idea! Hopefull they’ll be an option for members to “sit in” realtime/twitter on some your sessions provide feedback to the owners and be “testers” for the new techniques/content etc. being implemented. That may be helpful as well.

Also, want to say I’ve been w/ you guys since the begininng and really appreciate you always seeking to improve the format of the show. It definitely keeps the show refreshing and always helpful. Thanks for what you do!

Great episode guys, and Tim – I’m looking forward to checking out that book. I read a bit about it on Amazon, and it sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

I like the direction you are heading. I’m building my blog and audience at the moment, but would love to have a regular income from a membership site in the future.

One thought though. Do you think forums are dying out as people are using Facebook and Twitter for their socialising online?

LOVE your manifesto — right up my alley, too! Can’t wait to hear/learn more! =)

Hey Izzy & Tim – thanks for taking time to answer my comment. BTW I am not a girl, but I can see you might have gotten confused about this. :)
Basically I am completely with you. I think it can be easily summarized: if one has to do what he doesn’t like in order to keep his business he thought he is passionate about running, it is probably time to switch to something else. :)

    All the best,
    Riba
