How To Create A Successful Membership Site: Tim Bourquin Interview – FA060

From Police Officer To New Media Mogul: An Interview With Tim Bourquin of TraderInterviews.com

Tim Bourquin was day trading stocks after getting off his shift as a police officer.  He got interested in podcasting in the days before it was called podcasting and built an audience for a mountain biking/triathlon podcast — he later sold this podcast and it was most likely the first podcast ever sold.

Tim has a broad range of business experience so he has a big picture view of business combined with a depth of knowledge that only comes from being in the trenches — from creating a couple expos & selling them to building a successful membership site called TraderInterviews.com that gives Tim and his brother a great lifestyle.

This episode is a Blow Your Socks Off actionable, information-packed interview.  Listen at least twice if not half a dozen times.  You’ll learn something new each time.

We can’t wait to have Tim Bourquin back on the show.

Enjoy your Foolish Adventure,

Tim and Izzy

As one of the first podcasters (first show in November 2004), I’ve known Tim Bourquin for a long time. First met him at an Orange County Podcaster’s Meetup, even before the first Podcast Expo. I can say that Tim is a true gentleman…really one of the good guys. Thanks for having him on the show. I got some great ideas, two of which I have already taken action on! Kudos, Izzy and Tim!

Thanks for the kind words Steve – You’re one of the original people I met when I looked into podcasting!  I have great memories of those first Podcast Expos…

Simply awesome stuff Tim! I’ll be listening and taking notes again tomorrow, thanks!

How well I remember, Tim. The Orange County Podcasters Meetup was where we first met, right? Seems like just yesterday, but a lifetime ago, too. Things have certainly changed!

Interesting interview. But for some reason, I cannot see the advantage of giving lifetime membership. You get one price, and you then need to provide (quality) content for the REST of your life.
You don’t know where the internet will be in 2-3 years, but you already committed for way after that.

    Just my 2 cents

Thanks for listening to the show. Lifetime refers to the lifetime of the site, not the person. Still, I don’t personally offer lifetime memberships anymore. The longest subscription I offer is for one year.

Hey guys, LOVE your show!  Just a note to let you know that this episode hasn’t shown up in iTunes yet, so you might want to look into that.  Cheers!

That interview was AWESOME!! In my opinion that may be the best Foolish episode to date. It’s such a help when people are willing to give specifics and be so transparent. A+

My thoughts exactly Skylar. It was an AWESOME episode. I would love to get Tim back on the show soon.

  • Tom Williams

One of the best episodes yet!  You guys are great, but bringing in a third party brings the podcast to a new level.  Keep it up!

WOW!  Killer perspective on conversion with the single / double opt-in, lightbox, homepage content, everything… AWESOME!  (really sold me on the idea of interviews as content)  -  Thanks, Tim, Izzy, and Tim!    –Tom Wachowski, PHX AZ

I, too, thought this was one of the best episodes to date. Excellent guest. I was impressed that the guest was unphased by Izzy’s hard-hitting questions about money :) We all wanted to know the answers to those questions, and he was amazingly open about sharing numbers.

As feedback, I really like the ratio of how Foolish Adventure has some episodes that are just Izzy and Tim, and other episodes have guests. I don’t want guests all the time, I like the classic Izzy/Tim episodes too. But a guest every so often is a nice change and provides additional value.

Also, I find it VERY frustrating when podcast hosts have “guests” on their shows but the “guests” don’t get to talk much because the host keeps blabbing on so much (Pat Flynn is kind of bad for this). In this case, I think it’s great the way Izzy interviewed, Tim stayed pretty quiet and you both actually let the guest share all of his wisdom. Well done. The way you two interview is the way that it should be when you have an excellent guest who has lots to share, IMO.

    Keep up the great work!

Thanks, LJ. Tim was really open, though we don’t push people being open with their numbers though I know it can get people really jazzed about taking action. Unfortunately, I think too many people focus on what others are making, because the real lessons are not in how much they make, but how they are doing it.

    Awesome job Izzy and Tim!

I have to echo the other comments and say that this is one of your best interviews yet. I think because Izzy’s questions were coming from wanting to know personally how to improve his business… and the questions he asked, turns out, are what other people want to know too! This interview was an inspiration (will re-listen later), and congrats on putting together such a Foolish show.Frederick

I totally agree with you, Tim. I also think it’s useful when you guys ask percentage questions, like “What percentage of your income is product sales vs consulting vs affiliate commissions etc.” That seems like a good way to avoid talking about the real numbers, but still also getting a good sense of the business model.

Excellent show and some excellent information on membership sites. I have been toying around with this of recent and this show have me some really good ideas.
