How To Make Money From Your Podcast – FA038

Podcasting…We Finally Did It!

We finally covered a topic we probably should have covered in the beginning since it is central to the success that Izzy had in escaping the corporate grind.

In this episode we cover the different ways of making money from a podcast, whether audio or video, or as we call it an Online Show.

Inside you’ll learn about:

  • Advertising
  • Affiliate Product Sales
  • Consulting
  • Product Sales
  • And Brand Building.

This is one of our longest we’ve done, but strangely one with the fewest tangents.  Go figure.

Enjoy your Foolish Adventure,

Tim and Izzy

Hi guys!, I’ve finally listened to all the podcasts!… I have a question: I have 1,000 views every day on my “YouTube” channel. I’ve guest posted on problogger.net and I have built an email list of 25,000 confirmed subscribers.

    What do I do next?…

    Thanks

    Hi Dave,

Wow, those are some great numbers! Congrats!

What do you do next? That depends on where you’re trying to go… What are you trying to accomplish?

I checked out your site, and it appears you’re in the animation entertainment niche…What would you like to do inside the niche?

  • David Edwards

Thanks Izzy, I have a dotcom which I haven’t used yet candyskool.com my idea was to have a membership site for people to learn flash animation but it seems overwhelming to set up the content.

I have set up an e-guide page so that Google can index the page. I know though from feedback that most of our subscribers would rather buy a “Candy Toy” rather than learn flash.

    Tough one!,

    David

Merchandising would probably be a good idea. Easier to give what your audience wants than to get them to want something they aren’t coming for. Your’s is a business that I find very interesting since it presents a challenge. Maybe we should talk.

    Dear Izzy and Tim,

I was away on a business trip and ‘foolishly’ didn’t check my e-mail here at yahoo and when I hoped you guys had forgotten the deadline, Foolish U was already closed. I couldn’t have been more bummed.

I have enjoyed your shows immensely and have to say to you guys: you rock!! Your shows are really well done and you have a great voice, Izzy!

I have a quick question (if it is something that you can share): I really like your soundbites to open and close your show. I’ve been trying to purchase a collection of audio bites but don’t know where to find good stuff. Would you mind sharing this info?

    Thanks so much!

Marc Lefse – all the way from Norway!

Thanks Tim!, any advice would be great from you guys!…

Izzy, you mentioned you send headset mics to guests on your paper clippings round table podcast. I’m looking at doing the same thing for some guests on mine as they’re only using the computer’s built in mic (bad sound quality). What model/brand are you using?

    HI,

I just discovered your show, and aside from the usual “I love it and keep making more,, type comments… which I do wholeheartedly feel….

I just wanted to comment on your discussion about listing your podcast or “show” in Itunes or other podcast type feeds.. you guys were speaking of the Zune and such.
Now, here’s the deal, I “USED” to have a , well several beloved IPods and unfortunately one died and the other got lost forever in a snowbank :( DANG!!

So, I discovered one day that my Droid phone had a bunch of cool apps, and …and a 12G sd card.

Cool. So here’s the point, there is a cool program called Doggcatcher, that is absolutely Wonderful for finding podcasts and downloading them right to your phone, in my case Droid…probably would work well with any Android phone.
So to all you podcasters, get listed on Doggcatcher, it’s awesome,
Show’s Awesome too, although one of you sounds amazingly like Cliff Ravenscraft….hmm?

Hey ! I love your guys’ podcast ! Keep em’ coming ! My question is about views.  At what point do I really begin to think about monetizing my podcast in terms of viewership? 50 a day, 500 a day, 5000 a day?  At what point should the light bulb above my head go off and say ” I might be able to make some money from this?”

  • http://www.izzyvideo.com IzzyVideo

     Hey Sam,

    Thanks for listening. :)

I don’t think there’s a solid rule on this one. Personally I made sure I had at least 1000 subscribers to my show’s RSS feed before I tried to monetize.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who are successful when they do it right away, and there are others that wait. There’s really no “right” answer. You’ll never know until afterwards.

But that’s why we call this an adventure. :)

The number of people isn’t as important as whether you can provide a solution to your audience’s needs and desires. I like finding out if I have a business or not as soon as possible. If you have a few people on your email list then find out what they want and then sell it to them.

I’m reading your blog on an IPad. The audio tries to load in a new window and is a bit of a pain. iTunes will get your podcast out to more readers, can you add a link to your blog to add your podcast to iTunes?

  • Swankg

I have an entertainment podcast.  Currently it’s free on iTunes but I want to charge for each episode.  How can I do that?

    Many thanks, Geoffrey Tozer
