P30 – Day 16: Worth a Thousand Words?

Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language. ~ Walt Disney

There are very few things out there that sell amazingly well without any graphics/pictures/visuals at all, particularly products aimed at teaching someone something.

This is because humans have really interesting brains. Some folks learn better by seeing things done (video), some process information best if they read it (PDF or similar), and some need to hear it for it to register (audio, or again, video). The exact same information, presented in a different format, can sink in at completely different levels for different people.

If you have a product that is strictly words, you could be under-reaching folks who need to be able to visualize what it is that they’re learning. And because you probably already instinctively knew this, chances are, you’ve already been planning to include some kind of graphic element in your product. (Or if you didn’t, now’s your chance.)

Today’s the day to start putting those in, and finding places where visuals can enhance your message.

ACTION TASK:
At the beginning of the month, we mentioned making a folder for your graphics and noting on your outline where they might be placed.

Today, take the time to go through your folder to make sure you have everything you need. If you added new things to your outline, use today to get all of that in order and ready for layout.

Don’t miss the chance to have your hard work actually used by the people you’re trying to serve. Consider all the learning styles, and try (within reason) to accomodate them all.

TOMORROW:
It’s time to get interactive, and give your customers a way to internalize your information — we’re going to dive into worksheets and workbooks, and how to use them to make your product personal.
